The 2019 CLPNA AGM & Conference – The Alchemy of Professionalism – examines the elements of nursing professionalism, with experts from a regulatory, legal, clinical, research and patient-safety perspective.
From Alberta’s Licensed Practical Nurses to their managers, from health professionals to government, from health regulators to health affiliates, over 350 will attend this year’s event.
Dress to the nines and prepare to be entertained at the formal Awards Dinner on Monday evening. Four special individuals will be surprised with the honour of the annual LPN Awards of Excellence (nominations are open now!)
Everyone (it’s open to the public) is invited to hear CEO Linda Stanger share the comprehensive work of the CLPNA for 2018 at the Annual General Meeting. Handed out at the event will be the 2018 Annual Report and latest Strategic Plan / Business Plan.
Laura Crawford Excellence in Nursing Practice Award (LPN)
For an outstanding Licensed Practical Nurse (nominated by their peers) who consistently demonstrates excellence in practice through exemplary nursing knowledge, skills, attitude and judgement; promoting an atmosphere of teamwork; pride in the profession; and mentoring team members.
Pat Fredrickson Excellence in Leadership Award (LPN)
For an outstanding Licensed Practical Nurse (nominated by their peers) who consistently demonstrates excellence in leadership through their professionalism, advocacy, communication, and passion for the profession.
Rita McGregor Excellence in Nursing Education/Preceptor Award (LPN)
For an outstanding Licensed Practical Nurse (nominated by their peers) who, as a Nursing Educator or a designated Preceptor in a clinical setting, consistently demonstrates excellence in the provision of nursing education in their workplace.
Interprofessional Development Award (non-LPN)
For a non-LPN health care leader (nominated by an LPN) who is instrumental in building quality practice environments.
More than 330 delegates attended the 2018 College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta’s (CLPNA) AGM & Conference, May 9-11, at the River Cree Resort in Edmonton. The CLPNA’s Annual General Meeting opened the event with highlights from the 2017 Annual Report, and a look forward through the 2018-2021 Strategic Plan.
This year’s Conference theme of ‘Shifting Reality’ featured an exceptional line-up of keynote speakers addressing relevant and timely issues for LPNs and healthcare partners. Speakers included:
Dr. Greg Wells, University of Toronto with his presentation, The Ripple Effect: Sleep, Think, Eat and Move Better for Exponential Health and Peak Performance.
Marni Panas, Senior Advisor Diversity and Inclusion, Alberta Health Services delivered a moving account of her personal journey as a transgender woman and the need for Improving the Experience for Sexual & Gender Diverse (LGBTQ) People.
Dr. Francesco Mosaico, Medical Director, Boyle McCauley Health Centre, Detective Guy Pilon, Edmonton Police Service, Petra Schulz, Parent Advocate, Founding member of Moms Stop the Harm, and Marliss Taylor, Program Manager, Streetworks participated in the Strategies in a Time of Crisis – Opioids and Harm Reduction panel addressing audience questions through an interactive and engaging discussion.
Certified Image Consultant, Joanne Blake helped attendees take networking skills to a new level with: Connecting at Conference – Conversation to Connect.
Glenda Tarnowski, Director of Professional Practice, College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta closed out the conference with a motivational account of her career, reflecting on moments of challenge and transcendence, and the inspirational learning that directed her personal and professional journey in Worms 25 cents a Dozen! and Empowered Professionalism?
The 2018 Conference was rounded out with engaging concurrent sessions featuring a number of topics from health careers for Indigenous Peoples in rural communities, to care for the aging and those with perceptual deficits, to optimizing the LPN role in homecare, and holistic health.
A Conference app and Facebook Live capture of Friday’s concurrent sessions were added this year, allowing for increased engagement and real-time questions and comments.
Delegates complemented full days of learning with an evening of music, mingling and Mardi- Gras theme at the annual Awards Dinner honouring excellence in the LPN profession. Thursday’s Silent Auction raised almost $6,000 towards LPN education grants, and the popular Exhibitors Reception and tradeshow gave delegates the opportunity to meet and learn more about community partners that contribute to the well-being of Albertans.

To top it off, Alberta’s Licensed Practical Nurses are celebrating the 70th Anniversary of our profession with a formal gala Awards Dinner and some special surprises!
Over 400 Licensed Practical Nurses, Health Care Aides, and affiliated health professionals will join the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA) for the 2.5 day professional development event, April 26-28, 2017 in Calgary.
LPNs are invited to register a Health Care Aide colleague who will receive a reduced rate to attend this event. During the conference’s concurrent sessions, we’re presenting a special workshop for HCAs and all health providers: “A Celebration of Health Care Aides and the Integration of a Palliative Approach”.
All LPNs and interested members of the public are welcome to attend the Annual General Meeting of the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA) in Calgary on April 26.
The meeting takes place immediately before the annual CLPNA Conference celebrating the profession’s 70th Anniversary. This two and a half day event will connect 400 LPNs, employers, stakeholders and affiliated health professionals with information regarding nursing practice and professionalism.
There is no fee to attend the AGM; conference registration is not required.
